  • Spin rate of a black hole measured for first time

By NASA, Pasadena, CA on February 27th, 2013

Two X-ray space observatories, NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton, have teamed up to measure definitively, for the first time, the spin rate of a black hole with a mass 2 million times that of our sun.

The supermassive black hole lies at the dust- and gas-filled heart of a galaxy called NGC 1365, and it is spinning almost as fast as Einstein's theory of gravity will allow. The findings, which appear in a new study in the journal Nature, resolve a long-standing debate about similar measurements in other black holes ...

  • Was the Russian meteor hit by a UFO?

By Ted Bonnitt on February 23rd, 2013

The meteor that slammed into Russian air space last week continues to cause a stir across that country.

Just over half of people polled by a website hosted by the Ridus news agency believe the meteor signals the start of an alien invasion.

RussiaSlam, which monitors social media in Russia, reports that theories run the gamut from biblical apocalypse to end-of-the-world fears derived by misinterpreted Mayan prophesies.

Others believe that the meteor was intercepted by a secret Russian or U.S. air defense system, an unlikely scenario considering that the fastest missiles fly barely a tenth of the speed of ...
