Thousands of hi-res lunar mission pictures posted

More than 8400 high resolution photographs taken by astronauts during their Apollo moon missions were publicly released today.

The images were posted by the Project Apollo Archive which chronicles NASA’s manned lunar landing program in the late 1960s through early 1970s.  

Many of the images are personal candids and of scrapbook quality, ranging from pictures of food on board the spaceship to shadows cast by the moonwalkers during their lunar strolls.

The photos were taken by modified Hasselblad cameras which at the time shot high quality images on larger format film negative.

JFK proposes US-Soviet mission to moon

Just weeks before his assassination, President John F. Kennedy addressed the United Nations with a proposal to cooperate with the Soviet Union to go to the moon. His bold vision came at the height of the superpower cold war and was extremely controversial at the time. Meaningful international cooperation in outer space between the US and Russia would not happen until decades later, with development of the International Space Station.
